Weight Loss Q & A

Am I overweight or obese?

If you have a body mass index (BMI) that’s higher than normal your risks increase for chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and Type 2 diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) use the following categories to determine if you’re underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on your BMI:

  • Underweight = BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal weight = BMI 18.5 to less than 25
  • Overweight = BMI 25 to less than 30
  • Obese = BMI 30 or greater

Using BMI to determine if you’re overweight or obese is generally accurate, but because muscle weighs more than fat and doesn’t consider large amounts of lean body mass, it can sometimes be misleading.

To calculate your BMI, multiply your weight in pounds by 703, divide that number by your height in inches, and then divide by your height in inches once again.

What are the benefits of weight loss?

If you’re overweight or obese, the health and wellness benefits of weight loss are endless. Possible effects from losing excess weight include:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduced blood cholesterol
  • Lower blood sugar
  • Better sleep
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Lower heart disease, cancer, and Type 2 diabetes risks
  • Less bone and joint pain
  • Reduced osteoporosis risks
  • A lower risk of depression and anxiety

If you’re overweight or obese, losing just 5 to 10% of your body weight will likely produce these and other health benefits.
